Autism affects one in every 68 children in the United States, and a growing number of students each year the classrooms across San Diego County. Autism often affects the way the individual receives and processes information. A person with autism may also have sensory issues that interfere with learning.
To help, NFAR awards funding to educators to support the specialized academic needs of their students with autism. These grants give educators a vehicle for piloting new teaching tools, as well as funding of technology and programs that address key areas of concern for students with autism, such as social skills training, reading comprehension, developing effective communication skills for verbal and non-verbal students, as well as reducing sensory and behavioral issues that interfere with learning.
The 2017/ 2018 NFAR Teacher’s Grant Program timeline is as follows:

GRANT APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Grant Application is for the 2017 - 2018 school year and must be used within that year.
Teacher's Grants average $500 per grant application. Grant application minimum is $250, and up to $500 for multiple items.
Grant request can be up to $1,000 for a single item/ initiative.
Incomplete grant applications will not be accepted (includes incomplete budget details).
We do not accept multiple grants for the same classroom/ initiative.
"NEW in 2016" Educators can be awarded for up to three consecutive years in a row. Educators that have been awarded for three consecutive years are welcome to reapply again after the fourth year.
GRANT APPLICATION RESTRICTIONS:
- Educators that may apply include Autism Specialists, Classroom Teachers, Speech & Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Resource Teachers.
- Funds are to be used for educational programs within the greater San Diego area, Grades Pre-K – Transition and Specialized College Programs
- Educational programs, materials, and equipment requested must be for the benefit of current students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. (May benefit other students too, but must include those with an autism diagnosis.)
- Funds are not to be used for basic school supplies.
