"Steps to Success" for Those with Autism

  • 04 September 2014

This past Spring Xcite Steps, with funding from an NFAR Community Project Grant, launched "Steps to Success" a job and awareness pilot program for young adults with ASD, Asperger's Syndrome, and other developmental disabilities.

Eight participants met every Saturday for the eight week program. In the mornings, they volunteered at various job-sites for non-profit organizations around San Diego. In the afternoons, they worked on job skills in a classroom setting, including work ethics, job searches, creating a resume, interviewing skills, etc. Upon completion, each participant received an application packet, personal business cards, a polished resume, list of references, and a letter of recommendation.

Here are some of the participants comments:

"I had a great time taking this program and learned how to write more information on a resume and make new friends"

"I really found this class to be extremely helpful and the staff have a very strong knowledge of careers."

"I thought it was awesome. I learned a lot about the future and how to interview. I even feel ready to talk to people or customers."
